Thanks to Nitya Venkataraman at the University of Central Florida sex might not be so scary anymore. Venkataraman and cohorts discovered ancient DNA dormant within the human genome that has the ability to fight HIV. This DNA which has been considered ‘junk’ until recently, when activated allows the body to manufacture rare proteins called retrocyclins that block HIV from entering cells.
